Arne draped his cloak over Danielle before he took her outside the walls and down the footpath to the lake. The waxing moon glared at them like a half-open blind eye as it spangled the countless ripples sweeping through the water. He could taste the coming frost on the air, and the crimson and amber colors of the leaves now turning as the fall season beckoned. Behind them his archers stood watch on the walls, bows ready as they tracked his movements.

Danielle glanced back at the safehold. “It doesn’t look a thing like Four Roses, and yet somehow it reminds me of it. I got the same feeling the first time I saw the mansion, that it was more like a castle than a house.”

“The veil between our worlds was made thin in places by spells cast by the oldest master. A sense of each place comes through the other.” He guided her to the pavilion he’d had built among the evergreens, where he lit the brazier with the torch he carried. “Once I sailed north to see my homeland on this side of the gate. No people have ever dwelled there, and the land remains locked beneath miles of ice. Yet from the sea I recognized it. I felt I had come home again.”

She turned and frowned at him. “Why didn’t you go back to our world after you were freed?”

Arne gestured for her to come and sit with him on the bench by the fire. “I must show you why. Do not be afraid.” When she sat down he took the knife she had given him, held out his hand, and drew the edge across his palm, cutting deep.

“What are you doing?” She grabbed his wrist and pressed a fold of his cloak over the wound. “Are you going crazy for real? If you don’t want to answer a question, Lord Almighty, just say so.”

“This is your answer, my lady.” He drew the cloak away from his hand.

Danielle went still as his blood stopped flowing and the gash he’d made in his flesh began to close. “No.” She wiped the remaining blood from his hand to reveal his unmarked palm.

“It is not a trick. I heal from any injury in a few moments. I am faster and more powerful than any mortal could be, and I do not age.” He could see the disbelief in her eyes, and offered her the blade. “Cut me yourself.”

She didn’t quail at taking the knife, but only used the tip to nick the center of his palm. She then watched as the smaller cut closed, and wiped away the bead of blood. He felt how her hand shook as she handed the blade back to him.

“How?” she asked.

“Magic,” Arne said. “My friend Jacyn and the other blade lords used the blood of a master to acquire his powers.” He nodded toward the safehold. “I had been kept here by my master to train his slaves into fighters, but I knew the rebellion was coming.
